Environment

The Kansas City region met the new, stricter federal standard for ozone air pollution, otherwise known as smog, in 2005. At that time, the metro area was the geographically largest in the nation to be in compliance with the new eight-hour standard. Kansas City continues to be in attainment status for all Clean Air Act standards.

Achieving the ozone standard was a cooperative effort involving businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, state and local governments and environmental and consumer groups. These groups are working together to develop a long-term strategy for maintaining compliance of the federal standards.

Maintaining regulatory compliance, in turn protects the health of the regional economy and makes the Kansas City metro area more competitve nationally in attracting new growth and development, providing jobs and a better quality of life for area residents.

Local clean-air planning and programs are coordinated through the Air Quality Forum of the Mid-America Regional Council, a coalition of governments serving the bi-state Kansas City region.
