National Bio and Agro Defense Facility

National Bio and Agro Defense Facility

Manhattan, KS was selected by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as home to the $650M National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF).  This facility is expected to have a $3.5B economic impact on the broad region over the first 20 years of operation and generate additional life science industry growth.  Site preparation is now underway, with construction expected to be completed in 2016.  After certification and transfer of personnel and programs, it is anticipated to be fully operational in 2018.

Two new national centers have also recently been located in Manhattan, KS.  The Arthropod-Borne Animal Disease Research Unit (ABADRU) has relocated from Laramie, WY.  In February 2010, DHS announced a $12M award to establish the Center of Excellence for Emerging Zoonotic Diseases (CEEZAD) at K-State.  These capabilities are nicely complemented by those already existing at the Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State University, the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at the University of Missouri in Columbia and MRIGlobal here in Kansas City.

Clinical Research

The KC region has a strong clinical research base due in large part to the pharmaceutical development roots of Marion Laboratories. Today, more than 100 entities in the KC region conduct or manage clinical trials throughout the world..

The Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center (DCRC)

Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center (DCRC)The Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center (DCRC) supports the objectives of the University of Missouri in its mission of teaching, research and service. It is unique in its commitment to interdisciplinary collaborative research and teaching among various colleges, schools and departments across the Columbia campus. Under the auspices of DCRC, scientists from the fields of biochemistry, biological engineering, biological sciences, biomedical sciences, electrical engineering, medicine, pharmacology, physiology, physics, and veterinary medicine and surgery all come together and apply their particular expertise to research problems.

Our commitment to collaboration is grounded in the belief that interactions among scientists of diverse backgrounds will accelerate research advancements and translational findings that have far-reaching results. Research programs at DCRC include investigations into cardiac disease, cystic fibrosis, exercise, membrane transport, muscular dystrophy, neurohumoral control of the circulation, shock, vascular wall biology, diabetes, hypertension, biomedical engineering, protein-protein interactions, and tumor angiogenesis

MCC-Penn Valley Health Science InstituteThe MCC-Penn Valley Health Science Institute is a brand new, state-of-the-art education center that provides hands-on and interdisciplinary learning opportunities for the area's healthcare workforce. Simulated care settings, including a 10,000 sq. ft. virtual hospital, create a near-authentic healthcare environment where both students and experienced clinicians can learn and practice clinical skills.

Building on Metropolitan Community College proud tradition of providing quality, affordable healthcare career training since 1915, this new 170,000 sq. ft. facility will allow MCC to serve more students and healthcare professionals than ever before—and more effectively than ever before. Located in midtown Kansas City, the HSI gives urban residents access to training for high-wage, high-demand careers and gives new life to the Broadway corridor.

University of Missouri—Kansas City Center of Excellence in Mineralized Tissue

The UMKC Center of Excellence in Mineralized Tissue was recently established due to world class expertise at UMKC's Dental School, Bone Biology Program and Biomaterials Program. The Center specifically conducts research to prevent and treat diseases of mineralized tissue which includes teeth, cartilage, bone and muscle tissue. Research at the Center is applied to biomaterials, medical devices, diagnostics, imaging and veterinary medicine.

University of Kansas Cancer Center

160 world class researchers and clinicians from the University of Kansas—Lawrence, University of Kansas Medical Center, University of Kansas Hospital, Stowers Institute for Medical Research and the Midwest Cancer Alliance are central to the Cancer Centers vision in achieving National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center designation within the next decade.

Stowers Institute for Medical Research

Stowers Institute for Medical ResearchThis $300 million research facility opened doors of its 600,000 sq. ft. facility in 2000 and now houses 500 scientists from around the world focused on basic research on the genetic basis of disease. The Stowers Institute has a $2 billion endowment, which makes it one of the most well-funded and highly regarded research facilities in the world.

University of Missouri—Bond Life Sciences Center

Mond Life Sciences CenterTeamwork is key in addressing modern problems in the life sciences. The Bond Life Sciences Center is a state-of-the-art, 230,000 sq. ft. facility housing 35 of MU's most outstanding and productive scientists, as well as, a wonderful assortment of tools in a setting designed for interaction. The interdisciplinary research agenda in the Bond Center is being driven by advances in molecular and cell biology, genetics, bioinformatics and engineering, and particularly by the unifying concept of genetic interrelationships among all organisms. Topics of the Bond LSC's basic research include causes and cures for genetic and infectious diseases, plant and animal development, and ways in which organisms cope with environmental stresses.

The National Swine Resources and Research Center at the University of Missouri

The National Swine Resources and Research CenterThe National Swine Resources and Research Center is the only center in the United States dedicated to the research of swine genetics and reproduction as a comparative model. The center cloned the first pig in 1989 and was the first to sequence the DNA of a pig in 2006. In 2007, the center was the first to reproduce a pig using Invitro Fertilization. The comparative medicine research at the center is developing break through research technologies in cardiovascular disease, juvenile diabetes and reproductive technologies.

Research Reactor Center at the University of Missouri

Research Reactor CenterThe Research Reactor Center is the largest university research nuclear reactor in the world. This 10 MW nuclear reactor provides non-Department of Energy reactor produced radio nuclides to over 500 pharmaceutical and health care-related companies and academic partners around the world. In fact, MU is the only university in the world to have commercialized three radiopharmaceuticals.
