Manufacturing Education/Training Overview

The Kansas City region was selected by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and NAM's Manufacturing Institute to pilot a grassroots national campaign aimed at attracting young people into manufacturing jobs and expanding education and training opportunities to meet a growing shortage of skilled employees. The Alliance for Innovation in Manufacturing-Kansas City (AIM-KC) was created as the local partner for this effort.

Dream It. Do It. Campaign

The Dream It. Do It. campaign seeks to provide tools and resources for young adults to help them identify what they are passionate about and then utilize this information to find a fulfilling career in manufacturing. It also seeks to create an awareness of the broad range of highly paid, interesting careers offered in today's manufacturing.

Project Lead the Way

Project Lead the Way is a network of more than 3,000 schools in the United States, which offer standard professional development and curriculum.

Their mission is to create dynamic partnerships with our region's schools to prepare an increasing and more diverse group of students to be successful in engineering and advanced manufacturing programs.

Project Lead the Way facilitates change by:

  • preparing students for the rigor of college level engineering
  • improving overall math and science skills
  • using hands on, project-based learning that includes real world engineering challenges
  • targeting broad group of students
  • offering college credit to students
  • using state-of-the-art software & equipment
  • bringing engineers and professionals into the classroom

In the Kansas City region during the 2008-2009 school year 41 high schools and 15 middle schools participated in this program. Of these schools, 4,300 high schools students participated, including 1,000 seniors.
